Kate Middleton: The Mystery of the Wedding Gown Designer

April 26, 2011

For months, The Mystery of the Wedding Gown Designer was the only gripping story about Prince William and Kate Middleton. Prince William kept doing good deeds in Welsh helicopters, and Kate kept out of sight.

Faster than the tide went in and out, the names of designers rose and fell as the one who had the commission for Kate’s wedding gown: Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Jasper Conran, even Kate herself.

Early speculation centered on sentimental pick Bruce Oldfield, who dressed Diana and still wraps silk around wealthy Brit brides. A public visit by Kate’s mother and sister to his atelier seemed to clinch that.

Or did it? Much reading of body language in photos ensued, with this pic of les femmes Middleton outside Bruce Oldfield’s shop

The fashion media flock flew over to another designer after some bright spark remembered a coat Kate wore to a winter wedding. Dutifully lining up behind Sophie Cranston of Libelula, the media produced many an anecdote showing that this had to be Kate’s wedding dress designer.

Nervous members of the media then offered up this tweak — the royal bride might choose two, no, three dresses to wear to the celebrations on the wedding day. Three possible designers! What a great way to save face if Kate turned up in the Rolls Royce wearing a big surprise.

It’s gotten so bad that poor Sophie Cranston had to issue an official statement that she was not the wedding gown designer.

Well, cross that name off the list.

And how much difference can any designer make? It’s a wedding gown for the future Queen of England, not the dress to close a fashion show.

Here’s my conclusion, and feel free to quote me:

Kate Middleton’s wedding gown will be a floor-length creation of off-white silk with three-quarter length sleeves, worn with a long veil. Tiara optional.

What a shocker! Bridal fashion will never be the same again.

The latest buzz is Victoria Beckham and Kate put a gown together. If that’s true, wouldn’t that rock the royal fashion speculators?
Heard that from Piers Morgan on CNN.
